Best Plate Compactors for Residential Foundation Preparation

Question:

For an upcoming project involving prepping residential foundations, I am in need of a 24" plate compactor (hoepac) that will be mounted to a 580 Super M. I am looking for recommendations on preferred brands/models and also brands to avoid. Can you suggest the best plate compactor for residential foundation preparation?

Our Allied 8700 Ho-Pac, now known as the 1000, has been a reliable tool that is widely used in our area. The only issue we encountered was a bearing failure in the counterweight, which was an easy fix despite the machine being 10 years old. Have you already set up your machine for a ho-pac or breaker? We purchased the kit from Allied and found it to be much more affordable than the prices offered by the John Deere dealer. Allied has proven to be a highly successful option and is our top recommendation. If your equipment is not plumbed, consider checking out Burlington Installations, the authorized manufacturer for Case machinery. Some Allied packers may still have a small pipe plug near the bearing side of the motor, where the drain line was typically connected. While many users do not utilize a drain line, we suggest running a small 1/4" drain line as it can help preserve the seals. For more information, visit http://www.burlingtoninstallation.com/

Allied is a well-known brand in this area, but I personally prefer the BTI Hoe Pac. What sets the BTI apart is their innovative cushioning system. Unlike traditional rubber cushioning, BTI uses a honeycomb design that I believe is more durable and effective. This design reduces tearing compared to other models with side-mounted rubber cushions. I currently own a Kent Hoe Pac, which I find to be just as sturdy and reliable.

After purchasing a brand new Genpac for $1,000 at a RB auction, we successfully installed it on both our 580D and 590 Super M equipment. With over 1,000 hours of use, we are pleased to report that we have encountered no issues whatsoever. This reliable addition has proven its durability and efficiency on our job sites.

When considering compactors, a thought crossed my mind: is it feasible to affix a compacting plate to a rock breaker? In the future, I aim to acquire a rock breaker (or a machine breaker) for my Kubota, and the ability to also utilize it for compaction would provide numerous advantages.
