Can I substitute TDTO 30 for TDTO 50 in my D4H dozers final drives?

Question:

In the process of servicing my D4H dozer, I am replacing all the fluids and require 1.5 gallons of TDTO 50 for each of the final drives. I currently have 2 gallons on hand and need an additional gallon, but Cat only offers it in 5-gallon containers. I am hesitant to purchase $100 worth of oil that may go unused. Can I substitute 0.5 gallons of TDTO 30 with the TDTO 50? TDTO 30 is available in 1-gallon containers.

Instead of purchasing Cat-branded oil, consider buying a 1 gallon container of affordable SAE50 TO-4 rated oil from a reputable major oil company. Mixing it with your current oil will not cause any viscosity problems. It's unlikely that there are no retailers offering TO-4 SAE50 in smaller quantities.

Inquire with the oil distributor whether they offer the option to purchase a gallon from their bulk tank in case your local distributors do not stock it.

Nige suggested opting for 1 gallon of cost-effective SAE50 TO-4 rated oil from leading oil companies instead of purchasing Cat-branded oil at a higher price. This oil can be mixed with existing oil without any viscosity concerns. It seems unlikely that no one offers TO-4 SAE50 in smaller quantities. I have explored local oil distributors offering 5-gallon buckets and I may also check with some auto part stores. I have a surplus of Valvoline 50w racing oil that I do not intend to use. Lantraxco recommended inquiring with the dealer about purchasing a gallon from their bulk tank if local distributors do not stock it. This had not crossed my mind, especially since I have made substantial purchases from them in the past year. Surely they would be willing to accommodate my request for a single gallon.

In the near future, you will likely need to replace or upgrade your current oil supply, and there's no better time to do so than now. Take advantage of today's competitive prices before they potentially increase.

It is recommended to periodically add or change the final oil in your machine, as the price may not get any better than it is currently. For equipment with low operating hours, it is advised to change the final drive oil every 12 months to ensure optimal performance.
