Cat 950K Power Package Model for Composting Operation: A Review of Command Control Steering

It appears that we have been approved for the purchase of a new wheel loader. We are leaning towards the Cat 950K Power Package model for our composting operation, where we will use it for stockpiling materials, moving pre and post-process material, and turning compost windrows. It will also be utilized for road work and handling rock at our C&D landfill on site. While I have always been partial to Deere loaders for their speed, quietness, and comfort, our current 624K model has faced reliability issues in the 3000 hours since purchase. After demoing the Cat 950K for a week, I am now considering making the switch. Although I had initially planned on the next machine being a Deere 644 with lever steer, the lack of lever steer in the Cat 950K has me interested in trying out the command control system. I am particularly intrigued by the 70-degree steering for windrow turning. The 950K Cat loader is an impressive piece of machinery. While I am not a professional operator, I have had the opportunity to operate various Cat loaders. Personally, I prefer the CC model, but the new stick steer with force feedback in the 966K/972K models is a significant upgrade. Ultimately, the choice between the two comes down to your specific needs and operator preference. I would have no hesitation using this machine as my primary equipment due to its advanced features and improved usability.

Transitioning back to a standard wheel from using command control is always a bit jarring, but the benefits are undeniable. While there may be an adjustment period, the superiority of command control makes it worth it in the end.

Initially, some may find them sensitive due to the reduced need to turn the wheel to control the steering, but once familiarized, it becomes effortless. I had the opportunity to operate a 980h using this system, and the FNR (Forward, Neutral, Reverse) mechanism is conveniently located on the control console, allowing you to keep your hands on the wheel at all times. I am intrigued by the new K-series with stick steer and look forward to trying it out in the future.

This machine features a Command Control steering system, where the turning speed is not dependent on the steering wheel's speed. Instead, the turning speed is determined by the rotational position of the steering wheel in relation to the non-engine end frame. The pilot control valve is located on the non-engine end frame, while the steering wheel is on the engine end frame. The neutral position of the steering wheel corresponds to the angle of the front frame. When the machine is straight ahead, the steering wheel is also in a neutral straight ahead position. When the front frame points left or right, the steering wheel's neutral position follows suit. To articulate the machine, turn the steering wheel to the desired direction and hold it there. The machine will articulate until the non-engine end frame aligns with the steering wheel position. As the alignment nears, the articulation speed slows down until it stops at the neutral position. The steering wheel remains in neutral, and the machine maintains its current articulation angle.
