Common Transmission Problems with Tigercat 620E 2017 Models: Electronic Control Valve Failure and Conversion Options

Question:

I am the owner of two 2017 620E models with approximately 5000 hours of use on each. Recently, I have encountered shifting problems which have now led to the transmission completely failing. After consulting with a dealer, it was determined that the electronic control valve was the root cause, impacting the operation of the clutches and resulting in their burnout. I have been presented with the option of converting to manual or mechanical control valve, though I am unsure of the implications of this change. I am curious if others have experienced similar transmission issues with these models and opted for the conversion as a solution, or if the transmission is typically considered to be reliable.

Some users experienced issues with the EHS system while hauling heavy logs, as the transmission would automatically switch to high-speed mode. The EHS, or Efficient High Speed system, is designed to provide increased tractive effort when needed by utilizing both hydrostatic motors. When the tractive effort requirements decrease, such as when traveling on flat terrain, the system directs all pump flow to one motor to achieve higher travel speeds and improved efficiency. This transition occurs seamlessly without requiring any input from the operator. The 620E model comes equipped with a single-speed mechanical transmission, variable speed hydrostatic system with two variable displacement motors, and the option for the EHS hydrostatic drive.

After removing the grapples, we customized draw bars to tow 14-foot disc plows equipped with 34-inch plates on level terrain. Unsurprisingly, the transmission faced challenges due to the increased resistance.

Many individuals prefer to steer clear of electronic transmission controls for this very reason. In my opinion, for your specific needs, I would recommend choosing a 632 option.

Our Tigercat 630 equipped with EHS has encountered issues primarily related to the clutches for the 2-speed function. According to our mechanics, the local dealer discontinued ordering EHS machines due to these ongoing problems.

Many individuals I am acquainted with who have used EHS machines have encountered issues after reaching around 2,000 hours of usage.
