Custom Dump Truck Conversion: Transforming a Tractor into a Contractor Utility Dump

Question:

Greetings everyone, You may have seen my discussion on the main forum regarding the idea of driving a dump truck across the country. After careful consideration, I have decided to forgo that particular truck and instead focus on a concept that has been on my mind for some time - creating a custom dump truck from a tractor. I have come across some discussions on various forums about this topic, with the general consensus being that it may not be the most practical idea due to tractors typically not having heavy-duty frames or the appropriate gearing for a dump truck. However, I envision a different approach for my project - I am aiming for a contractor box/flatbed/utility dump, meant for lighter loads and personal use. What intrigues me about this project is the opportunity to convert an older, cool tractor to meet my specific needs. I can also equip it with a larger engine and more gears than a typical small contractor dump truck, providing me with more flexibility and power. Additionally, having the capability to pull any tag trailer of my choice adds to the appeal of this project. In my search for the right tractor, I am on the lookout for one with a wet kit, a longer frame, double frame (if possible), and spring suspension. While I am considering a tandem axle for added length, I am open to the possibility of removing the front axle if needed. I have researched the potential challenges, such as lengthening the driveshaft, and believe it can be overcome with proper planning. Has anyone embarked on a similar project before? I would appreciate any insights or thoughts on this idea that you may have to share. Let's discuss and explore the possibilities together.

In this region, the majority of tandem dump trucks have been transformed from road tractors, with around 75%-80% falling into this category. Many still retain their sleeper cabs, resulting in a shorter dump bed, while others have a plate on the back of the cab where the sleeper once was. These converted trucks are a familiar sight in the area, regularly transporting loads of dirt and asphalt.

I made a wise investment in purchasing a sturdy old plow truck equipped with a dump box for $8,000. This truck has a double frame, making it exceptionally heavy duty. The cost of purchasing separate used trucks and dump boxes with hoists would have been much higher. Opting for a pre-equipped dump truck like mine can save you both money and frustration. While it's possible to set up a dump truck yourself, it can come with its fair share of headaches. Save yourself the hassle and consider buying a dump truck that's ready to go.

Andy, are you interested in upgrading to a larger contractor/tool/dump truck setup, typically seen on F450/550 trucks? I have been considering the same idea. In Florida, Tank Lines frequently sells their Mack Pinnacle tractors, some of which are in good condition with 300-500K miles. A friend of mine purchased one for his concrete business to occasionally pull a lowboy trailer, and it has proven to be a reliable investment. These trucks can be acquired at auctions for around $15-20K, and since we won't be putting 10-15K miles on the truck annually for equipment transport, it seems like a cost-effective option. I am thinking of outfitting it with a non-dumping flatbed, fuel tank, grease keg, air compressor, tool boxes, and leaving space for hauling buckets. With a pintle hitch, we can easily tow our 54K tag trailer and transport all our equipment, with the exception of 321/325, which we can hire a local lowboy to move. Just a concept I have been considering.
