Enhancing Tree Work Efficiency: Considerations for Upgrading to HTC1170 Crane

Question:

Currently, our tree work operations rely on two tms300s. However, we are considering investing in a larger crane due to the height and reach limitations of our current equipment, especially when handling larger trees in the area. We frequently rent an htc8670 for its additional lifting capacity and reach. Unfortunately, there is only one rental option for a crane of this size in our region, which often leads to delays. To address this issue and improve efficiency, we are exploring the possibility of purchasing the htc1170 model. Before making a decision, we are seeking insights on any potential issues associated with this model. While we have a reliable repair shop, we aim to minimize any non-routine maintenance or repairs. Additionally, we are open to considering a grove crane with similar specifications, provided it fits within our budget constraints.

The HTC 1170 is known for its 11-foot width and ability to run on 14.00R20 rubber tires. It features a non-removable counterweight and can be challenging to scale legally, even with a boom dolly due to its heavy weight. Its wide build may make it difficult to navigate residential areas. The crane may not have all full power main capabilities, but rather uses a power pin section. It is not a common crane in the market. Consider exploring other options, such as the 8670, which offers a different design with an 8-foot carrier and a more manageable 24-foot width, along with standard rubber tires.

Thank you for the information regarding carrier width; unfortunately, it doesn't meet our requirements. While I have come across load charts, I hadn't seen carrier specifications before. The crane I had my eye on is not available locally, so perhaps I should start saving up for a Grove 8670 or a similar model. A nearby rental company uses an 8670 with some counterweight and has no issues with weight capacity. We definitely need something larger than our TMS300s, both of which have a limited range with a 104' boom. Last week, we assessed a tall poplar tree for removal, standing at 130', making it challenging to reach with a 136' boom/jib.

The 1170 crane is often sold at a discounted price due to its large size relative to its lifting capacity. This makes it less practical for many users, leading to its affordability in the market.

These products are definitely not in the budget-friendly category. I will explore other options that may better suit our needs. We have been quite satisfied with the powerful performance of the htc8670 model, especially its 115 main power pin feature.
