Guide to Converting a Truck into a Dump Truck: Recommendations and Controls Setup

Question:

Hello, I'm new to this platform and I have some inquiries regarding the conversion of a truck into a dump truck. We are working on a 1994 Fld 112 equipped with a 50 series Detroit engine, previously used as a water truck. After removing the tank, we now have the cab and chassis, and have acquired a 13-foot dump bed for installation. The accompanying cylinder is a 6-inch, 3-stage cylinder with a single hydraulic hose connection. We have yet to select a valve and would appreciate any recommendations. Additionally, we are seeking guidance or visual aids on the setup of controls commonly used in similar conversions, such as PTO, dump, tailgate, shaker, and tarp controls. Given the configuration of our axles and the length of the bed, our hinges will extend slightly beyond the rear axle compared to typical dump trucks in our area. What is considered an acceptable distance for a 13-foot box in this scenario?

When setting up a dump truck, it's important to position the hinges close to the end of the dump box for optimal functionality. Consider the type of pump you need - one with a built-in control valve is best for simple operations, but they may lower the box slowly. You can improve the speed with a quick drop valve or an electric over hydraulic valve. Consult a professional dump truck shop for more hydraulic options. For PTO control, consider an air-operated system. Tailgate control can be achieved with a small dual-acting air cylinder. I recommend a 1½" bore dual-acting cylinder for efficient operation. Velvac offers a quality air control for the cab. Electric and air shakers are available, with air shakers being easier to hook up. When it comes to tarps, electric options are available but can be expensive. Consider using a switch to control the tarp motor. For more information, feel free to ask for further clarification.

For optimal performance, consider utilizing a direct mount PTO with air shift and a Commercial C102 pump equipped with a built-in valve. When it comes to controls, Buyers is a reputable vendor known for offering a comprehensive selection of products.

For optimal durability and performance, I highly recommend reinforcing the frame rails, particularly the rear section extending beyond the suspension mounts. The weight placed on the frame at the hinge pins, especially when the box is raised and the load is stubborn to unload, can cause a single channel frame to bend. In this area, dump trucks commonly utilize a single acting cylinder powered by a pump and PTO, as described by 87silvert.

Thank you for your input. The truck is already equipped with an air shift PTO that powered a Bowie pump. Although I am uncertain about the specific hydraulic pump installed. The box we obtained from a truck that suffered a fire damage, has hinges in place and we have prepared a piece of angle with hinges to attach to our frame. The placement of the hinges on the box is fixed, but on our frame, they will be positioned slightly further back from the rear axle, closer to the cab. Is there a standard measurement for how far back the hinges should be in relation to the rear axle? We only cut the air lines to the shaker and tailgate when removing the box from the old truck. Do air shakers require additional switches beyond air control? We were hoping to operate the tailgate and shaker with simple switches like those used for air bag suspension and differential locks. Is this the type of switch you mentioned? Thank you.

I was probably in the middle of typing my response when you posted about Mobiltech. It was clear that we needed to provide additional support.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

FAQ: 1. What type of valve is recommended for a 6-inch, 3-stage cylinder in a dump truck conversion?

Answer: - For a 6-inch, 3-stage cylinder with a single hydraulic hose connection, a commonly recommended valve for dump truck conversions is a 3-way, 4-position hydraulic directional control valve.

FAQ: 2. Can you provide guidance on setting up controls like PTO, dump, tailgate, shaker, and tarp controls in a converted dump truck?

Answer: - Setting up controls in a dump truck conversion involves installing control switches or levers for functions like PTO engagement, dump bed operation, tailgate release, shaker (if equipped), and tarp operation. It's essential to ensure proper wiring, labeling, and placement of these controls for efficient and safe operation.

FAQ: 3. What is the acceptable distance for the hinges of a 13-foot dump box in a scenario where they extend beyond the rear axle?

Answer: - In a scenario where the hinges of a 13-foot dump box extend slightly beyond the rear axle, an acceptable distance would typically depend on factors such as local regulations, weight distribution, and maneuverability. Consulting with a truck conversion expert or referring to industry standards can help determine the appropriate extension distance for safe and effective operation.
