Help Needed: Choosing a 3 Point Hitch Plate for Clearing Fence Rows with a Tractor Rake

Question:

I am contemplating purchasing a 3 point hitch plate to attach an 8’ tractor rake for clearing limbs and debris from fence rows. Seeking advice on using a rake to clean up debris with a tractor or skid steer. Interested in a durable King Kutter type rake but unsure of reliable brands. This equipment will be used occasionally, so investing in a skid steer dedicated set up is not feasible. Struggling to find a used one. Any thoughts on whether this set up will be helpful or problematic? Share your opinions or concerns.

Different types of rakes

We initially tried using an 8-foot rake on a 3-point hitch, but it didn't perform as expected when clearing land of debris. We were looking to efficiently remove buried items while preparing the land for use. However, the rake struggled to unearth buried objects and frequently caught debris in its tines. Additionally, it would often gather excess dirt along with the debris, especially on uneven or grassy terrain. Ultimately, we decided to sell the rake and now utilize a stone fork attachment on a CTL machine for more effective debris removal. This allows us to create neat piles of debris before switching to pallet forks to load everything onto a dump truck. This method has proven to be more efficient and less prone to gathering unnecessary dirt, especially in wet conditions.

While using my Leinbach, I discovered that it excelled at pulling up large amounts of dirt. I would create a windrow and then pull it at a 90-degree angle to the initial direction, repeating the process 2 or 3 times. With each change in direction, the plot of land became cleaner. Unfortunately, my trusty Leinbach was stolen and I never got around to replacing it. Despite breaking a few teeth, the Leinbach remained sturdy throughout its use.

In order to efficiently clean miles of overgrown fence line, we are manually cutting and removing debris such as vines, small limbs, and weeds. However, to save time and manpower, we are exploring ways to gather the debris into larger piles for easier loading. This process will help streamline the cleanup process and make it more efficient.
