How to Remove Engine from John Deere Square Shooter 636 (JD4039D) Without Removing Boom

Question:

Has anyone successfully removed the engine from this John Deere machine without having to remove the boom? The engine is currently running, but it overheated and blew the head gasket, resulting in excessive blow-by. I have received a quote for a remanufactured JD engine and am now considering the steps involved in completing the engine swap without taking off the boom.

Is it possible to remove the rear axle and come out from the bottom? I remember a 1998 model I worked on with the hydraulic tank at the rear and fuel tank in the middle, creating an open bottom. Removing the main boom pin can be a challenging task. If your machine drives the hydraulic pump with a front crank driveshaft, it may be seized up. I recall it having a set screw and keyway, with worn rubber couplings at each end that required an air hammer and heat for removal. The couplings, manufactured by York, were missing from Terex's parts book, but we were able to find a York part number for sourcing through Terex.

This vintage 1995 model has the same configuration. I appreciate the advice about the pump coupling. I am considering the option of going out through the bottom, which would require some careful calculations. Alternatively, I may need to find a way to support the boom while I work. Thank you for your insights and suggestions.

After consulting my parts catalog, it appears that the axle mount is welded in place. In this case, the motor may need to be removed from the top once the boom is raised all the way up. However, there may be limited space due to the boom cylinders obstructing the way. It is important to assess if there is enough clearance to lift the motor out, as dropping a cable down is not an option. Depending on the tools and equipment available, it may be necessary to remove the boom to access the motor. Extracting the pin from the boom could require a variety of tools. With over 30 years of experience in this field, I am willing to assist in any way possible. Safety is paramount, as mishaps can result in serious injuries. Best of luck with the repair process.

To properly remove the radiator, it should be lifted out from the top. Elevate it carefully, detach the radiator, and then remove it from the vehicle.
