How to repair a National 600C telescoping boom cylinder with tricky cabling retract system

Question:

Looking for advice on repairing a telescoping boom cylinder with a tricky cabling retract system? It seems like the packings on the hydraulic ram may have blown out during a recent job. While working on a water tank in a near horizontal position, the boom experienced a sudden issue resulting in a leak of oil. After struggling to retract the boom fully and encountering obstacles like electrical lines, a temporary fix was applied to bring the boom back in using the hoisting control. Now faced with the task of rebuilding the boom, the complexity of the cabling system may require professional assistance. Have you ever tried fixing a National crane boom with a 4 section boom and two-stage hydraulic ram before?

If you are not sure whether you have cables or chains, simply reassemble them in the same way as when you disassembled them. Repacking the long, awkward cylinder is not hard. The pistons on the ones I've worked on were secured with red Loctite and required some effort to loosen. You can remove them from the top or bottom, with the bottom being quicker if you don't need new cables or chains. Be sure to maintain some tension on the top rollers. Adjust the slack for a smooth and even pull once you understand the cable system.

When adjusting cables, I follow the method suggested by a caveman, by measuring the length of thread sticking out of each nut and reassembling it in the same way. This technique ensures precise adjustments and proper cable tension.
