How to safely remove the inner boom cylinder from a Lull 644

Question:

Hello everyone! Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to remove the inner boom cylinder from a Lull 644? This cylinder is long and heavy, so I am seeking good suggestions to prevent further damage. Currently, the involved hoses are disconnected, the reel line has been removed, and the cylinder pin has been taken out. The boom is positioned horizontally and secured with a post under the outer boom section, with the machine parked and the wheels secured. The cylinder is in the extended (C) section position due to a problem with no retracting action and a significant hydraulic fluid leak, caused by a break in the steel pipe at the top back end of the cylinder. The solution is to remove the cylinder for welding of the damaged pipe. Is it possible to retract the cylinder in place using a hydraulic jack, chain block, strong straps, or another method? I attempted to use small straps today, but the cylinder did not move at all. I appreciate any help or advice you may have on this issue. Thank you! - J-F

If you've never tackled the task of removing the boom telescope cylinder on a Lull 644, you may face some challenges. However, it's worth noting that this particular cylinder is equipped with holding valves to prevent uncontrolled movement. These are likely cartridge type valves located at the base of the cylinder. While it is possible to remove these holding valves to retract the cylinder with a jacking mechanism, be prepared for a messy situation as oil will likely leak from the opening left behind by the removed valve.

By the way, which 644 series are you referring to? What specific product or model number do you have in mind?

I am not entirely sure, but here is some information I have gathered about it. The vehicle is a 1989 Model 644-TT34 Highlander II with a closed driver cockpit designed for harsh winters. Feel free to reach out for more details. J-F.

Do you have the serial number readily available?
