Optimizing Performance of Sullair 185 DP Portable Compressor with John Deere Engine

Question:

Hello, I am the owner of a 1980 Sullair portable compressor unit equipped with a John Deere 4-cylinder diesel engine. Unfortunately, the unit is currently out of adjustment and I do not have the necessary documentation to rectify the issue. Despite my efforts to find assistance online, I have been unsuccessful. I am seeking guidance on the adjustment process to optimize the performance of the compressor-engine. Attached is a photo of the machine and the identification details of the portable compressor are as follows: Model: 185 DP 2W JD, S/N: 00478356 AHI. The engine model is John Deere 4219 and the compressor element details are as follows: part #: 10558-1, S/N: 81XN10-0173. Any help or guidance provided would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Are you looking to fine-tune engine RPMs or compressor pressures for optimal performance?

Hello Hardline, I believe that both the compressor element and the engine are important in this situation. The information I found online regarding the optimal adjustment of Sullair compressors doesn't seem to apply to my specific machine. It appears that each model requires its own unique adjustment process. Therefore, I am in need of the correct procedure to follow for my machine. Thank you!

It can be difficult to determine from just one photo, but it appears that the unit in question is an older model with a diaphragm that controls a linkage to the engine throttle. It may also have a linkage connected to the compressor inlet throttle. These units typically generate air until reaching a pressure of 110-120 psi, at which point the control diaphragm returns the engine to idle and may adjust the compressor inlet throttle. When the valves are opened and pressure decreases, the throttles will open to maintain the desired psi pressure. Once you open the discharge and the pressure starts to decrease with the engine running at full throttle, you have reached the maximum CFM output.
