Greetings to all members of this forum! I am a newcomer from Ecuador, located in South America. In my current role, I handle equipment that aids in the smooth functioning of our facility operations for our clients. Presently, I am tasked with the maintenance of a JLG 800A articulating boom lift. We have encountered an issue with the internal seal in the center rotary coupling of the equipment. Upon consulting the local dealer, it was advised by the factory to replace the coupling. We have acquired a refurbished coupling and are now preparing to install it. However, we have a couple of queries: 1. Does the coupling solely control the hydraulic fluid flow to the wheel motors? 2. Is it necessary to provide additional support at the base of the boom to prevent it from falling when disconnecting the hydraulic fluid lines? Your expertise on these matters would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Best regards, Alfonso.
The rotary swivel joint is responsible for supplying oil to the wheels for both rotation and braking purposes. It is located at the center of the frame. Additionally, the boom features a holding valve on the cylinders, allowing you to raise it for better access from the top if necessary. Some machines are equipped with a ball shut-off valve near the hydraulic tank, which should be opened before operation to prevent damage to the pumps due to lack of oil flow. It is important to have plenty of caps and plugs on hand and use different colored wires to label hoses and their corresponding positions on the swivel joint. When replacing an old swivel joint, swap over fittings one by one to the new joint and be sure to replace all O-rings. Take your time and avoid rushing the process, as mixing up hoses can lead to confusion and complications during operation.
Thank you for your response, tool king. I believe it's necessary to purchase a new o-ring kit and markers to ensure that no hoses are overlooked.
Ensure to replace the O-rings on both sides of the fitting for proper sealing. Neglecting to do so may lead to issues in the future. It is important to use high-quality replacement O-rings to avoid any problems. Consider using colored zip ties or phone cable wire for marking lines, as they come in various colors for easy identification. Losing an O-ring can cause immediate issues when using the fitting.
These components can be quite heavy! It is recommended to use a strap and crane from above to safely lower them after removing the bolts and hoses.
When removing and reinstalling a swivel with hose connections, it's important to document the orientation with detailed pictures. In case there is any confusion during the re-installation process, referring back to these pictures will be incredibly helpful. Remember, a picture is worth a thousand words when it comes to correctly fitting the swivel and hose connections.
Answer: Answer: Yes, the rotary coupling plays a crucial role in controlling the flow of hydraulic fluid to the wheel motors of the JLG 800A articulating boom lift.
