Troubleshooting Half-Speed Left Drive Issue on Case 1840 Skid Steer

Question:

I experienced a sudden decrease in speed on the left drive of my 2000 Case 1840 skid steer while in use. While moving forward, the left drive now operates at only half speed, but functions normally at full speed in reverse. Upon inspection, the chain drives and drive gear appear to be in good condition with no spline damage. Testing the torque by pushing on a tree revealed no noticeable difference between the left and right drive mechanisms. There are no signs of mechanical noise or slippage. All linkages and levers appear to be in working order, with the pump valve stem rotating fully to each hard stop as indicated in the manual. I attempted to resolve the issue by swapping the relief valves from the left to the right side of the pump to no avail. With approximately 3300 hours on the machine, I am unsure if the issue lies with the pump, motor, or valving. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If there is no connection, there may be a blockage between the swash plate and the stop mechanism.

I have carefully inspected the linkage and it appears to be properly connected and functioning well. I would appreciate your input on the condition of the swash plate and stop. Is there a way to check this with a pressure gauge or another method? Or do you recommend disassembling it for a closer inspection? Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

If you're unsure, inspect the keyway and taper on the shaft, particularly the swash plate shaft where the linkage attaches on the pump. Newer machines may have a different configuration, so capturing a photo of the pump and its tag could provide valuable information. Look for the model name "Sundstrand xxxxxxxxxxxx" on the tag for identification.

I am unsure of the brand of this pump as I was unable to find a tag on it. Despite my efforts to take photos, capturing a clear image was difficult. I believe it may be necessary to remove the cab in order to thoroughly inspect and clean the pump. The attached photos are the most detailed I could obtain, including one showcasing embossed lettering on the side casting. It remains unclear if this information is significant for identifying the pump.

The front pump in the picture appears to be the source of the issue. Further examination is needed to locate the swash plate shaft you referred to. Is it recommended to remove the spool valve for inspection purposes?
