In my 1999 JLG with a Ford 2.5 carbureted engine, I am experiencing an issue where the engine starts when cranked but shuts off immediately when the starter is released. Despite having good fuel pressure, the fuel pump only runs when the starter is cranking. I recall it possibly running with the key on and engine off, but I am unsure. Could a faulty engine oil pressure sensor be the culprit? It is possible that the sensor bypasses when the starter is turning, but stops the engine once the starter is released.
I am experiencing the identical issue. Have you been successful in finding a solution?
It seems that the issue was caused by a sporadically malfunctioning fuel pump.
To determine the issue, it is recommended to check the power and output at the oil pressure switch. When starting the engine, there is initially no oil pressure, so the carb solenoid receives a signal from the starter circuit to begin the engine. Once the engine starts and the start switch is released, the power signal is cut off. At this point, the engine has built up oil pressure, causing the oil pressure switch to close and maintain power to the carb solenoid, thus ensuring the engine continues to run smoothly. This process is crucial for the proper functioning of the engine.
Answer: Answer: The issue could be related to the fuel pump only running when the starter is cranking, indicating a possible fuel delivery problem.
Answer: Answer: It is possible that a faulty engine oil pressure sensor could be the culprit if it bypasses when the starter is turning but stops the engine when the starter is released.
Answer: Answer: You may want to check the fuel delivery system, including the fuel pump operation, fuel pressure, and the engine oil pressure sensor to diagnose and fix the problem.
