Troubleshooting Weak Final Drive Issue in Ditch Witch MX45 (Komatsu PC45MR-1)

Question:

Hello, everyone! I have a Ditch Witch MX45 with 2900 hours on it, purchased when it had 2500 hours. The right final drive seems to be weak once the machine warms up. I plan to conduct a case drain test on the final drive soon, but I have a suspicion that it may be the swivel joint causing the issue. Neither side is powerful enough to turn the machine at high speeds, even when it is cold. Is there a way to test the swivel joint as well? I am currently in the process of repainting the machine and would like to diagnose the problem before putting all the covers back on. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! On a side note, since acquiring the machine, the backup alarm was disconnected. After reconnecting it, the alarm only activates when I reverse. However, it remains on even when moving forward and does not turn off. When disconnected, the alarm stops but then resumes the continuous beeping in both forward and reverse. I am unsure if this is related to my issue with the final drive. Thank you for your help!

Is it possible to access the swivel joint through the lower access panel for rebuilding purposes? It seems challenging to do so from the top without having to remove the entire platform and controls. Any advice on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Although I am unfamiliar with this particular machine, I always prioritize testing pressures initially. If pressure bypassing occurs as the motors heat up, this issue will be reflected in the readings on the pressure gauges.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

FAQ: 1. How can I test if the swivel joint is causing the weak final drive issue in my Ditch Witch MX45?

Answer: Answer: To test the swivel joint, you can perform a swivel joint test by checking for any leaks, unusual noises, or resistance when manually rotating the swivel. You may also want to inspect the hydraulic fluid levels and condition in the swivel joint system.

FAQ: 2. Is the issue with the backup alarm related to the weak final drive problem in my Ditch Witch MX45?

Answer: Answer: The issue with the backup alarm is likely not directly related to the weak final drive problem. It's possible that there could be separate electrical or sensor issues causing the backup alarm to malfunction. Consider checking the wiring and sensors related to the alarm system for any faults.

FAQ: 3. What could be causing the right final drive to become weak once the machine warms up in my Ditch Witch MX45?

Answer: Answer: The weak final drive issue could be due to various factors such as hydraulic system problems, worn-out components, low hydraulic fluid levels, or internal damage within the final drive itself. It's recommended to conduct a case drain test on the final drive and inspect the system for any potential issues.
